Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup mashed ripe bananas (about 2 medium bananas)
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Cream Butter and Sugars: In a large mixing bowl, cream the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add Eggs and Bananas: Beat in the eggs one at a time, then mix in the vanilla extract and mashed bananas.
  5. Combine Mixtures: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with buttermilk, starting and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined. Fold in the chocolate chips.
  6. Bake the Cakes: Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
  7. Frost the Cake: Once the cakes are completely cool, frost the top of one layer with chocolate frosting, place the second layer on top, and frost the top and sides of the cake. Decorate as desired.
