Easy Champurrado Recipe

This champurrado features a smooth blend of chocolate and masa, creating a deliciously thick drink. The recipe takes about 30 minutes from start to finish and serves 4 people.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups milk (or water for a lighter version)
  • 1/2 cup masa harina (corn flour)
  • 1/2 cup chocolate (Mexican chocolate or semi-sweet chocolate)
  • 1/4 cup sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Masa: In a bowl, mix the masa harina with 1 cup of milk until smooth and free of lumps.
  2. Heat the Milk: In a saucepan, heat the remaining milk over medium heat until warm but not boiling.
  3. Combine Ingredients: Gradually whisk the masa mixture into the warm milk, stirring continuously to prevent lumps.
  4. Add Chocolate and Sugar: Stir in the chocolate, sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Continue to cook over medium heat, stirring frequently, until the chocolate is melted and the mixture thickens (about 10-15 minutes).
  5. Finish and Serve: Once thickened, remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract if using. Serve hot in mugs, optionally garnished with a sprinkle of cinnamon.
